2. Formation of the Chinese Character
A. The Chinese characters can be formed basically from any of the 4 forms of presentations namely:
a) Pictograph/pictogram
b) Indicative characters
c) Ideograph characters
d) Pictophonetic compounded characters

The pictogram (pictographic character) form is the foundational and original presentation of the Chinese character. This form has the least number of characters in the list of Chinese vocabulary yet it is the easier in character formation.

Indicative character form simply adds an additional indicative symbol to the pictographic character form to give it a new meaning or idea.

The Ideograph Form and the Pictophonetic Form characters are derivatives of the pictogram form. These two forms are created by either a combination of 2 pictographic characters or the synthesis of a radical and a phonetic character.

Pictophonetic Form has the largest numbers of characters in the Chinese vocabulary – 90% of Chinese characters are of this form. Therefore, an understanding of the composition structure of the pictophonetic form together can speed up the learning of Chinese character. The objective is to grasp the commonly used components which give the meaning to such pictophonetic form character will help to achieve a faster learning rate.

1. Character Matrix
“Easi Chinese” – this teaching material takes a pictogram radical to combine it with the phonetic radical to form characters with the same pictogram. These characters are displayed in a column. Eg. The pictogram for “food” (食)(饣) is combined with phonetic radicals like “fan” (反), “bao”(包), “ji” (几)

(食)
(饣)

Then a character in the row has the same phonetic but different pictogram radical to another word with a different meaning or idea, eg. the phonetic “bao” (包) is put together with “shou” 手,”yue” 月, “yu” 鱼 to give new words 抱, 胞, 鲍. In this way the student will build his vocabulary in a relational and word associative manner.

2. Character Radical Differentiation
“Easi Chinese” explains in detail the 119 commonly used radicals with illustrations. It also differentiates the more confusing radicals from the more frequently used radicals. The student is enabled to master the meaning of the original radicals and those that evolved from the original. In this way the student will avoid writing the wrong Chinese character having understood the meaning of a radical in the Chinese character.

3. Words and Phrases
